On a warm summer evening, on Long Island in the 1940's, wealthy shipping magnate Charles Berkley (Michael O'Keefe) hosts an elegant engagement party for his only daughter Sarina. She has been promised to marry the wealthy, playboy Sam Harrington whom she despises. All of Long Island's upper class are in attendance to witness this blessed union, which has been secretly arranged in order to unite two of the most powerful families of that time.
Despite her loyalty and respect for her father, Sarina plans her escape. Unbeknownst to her father, she has fallen madly in love with William Smith, a servant boy working in her mansion. Knowing her father would never approve of their union, Sarina is forced to make a life changing decision. With the help of her faithful maid Maggie (Margot Kidder), and her ever loyal butler Phillipe (Mauricio Bustamente), Sarina embarks on a journey in hopes to free herself from her aristocratic upbringing for a chance at true love.
